Job Description
The Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who provides clinical expertise and leadership across the perinatal service line. This role supports high-quality, evidence-based patient care by influencing nursing practice through direct care, consultation, education, mentorship, research, and system-level improvement initiatives.
The CNS functions across three spheres of influence: patients and families, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization or healthcare system. This role fosters a culture of clinical inquiry, promotes best practices, and drives improved clinical and service outcomes in alignment with National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides advanced nursing care to patients, families, and defined perinatal populations using a holistic, evidence-based approach
- Serves as a clinical expert and consultant to nursing staff, providers, and interdisciplinary teams
- Leads and supports practice improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and nursing quality
- Applies evidence-based standards, clinical guidelines, and innovative approaches to advance perinatal care
- Collaborates across disciplines to optimize clinical outcomes and promote care excellence
- Coaches, mentors, and educates nursing staff to support professional development and clinical competence
- Participates in nursing research, quality improvement, and evidence translation initiatives
- Identifies and addresses ethical concerns and advocates for patients, families, staff, and systems
- Supports system-level change initiatives to improve nurse-sensitive and patient-centered outcomes
Requirements
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN or MS in Nursing)
- Minimum of two years of recent obstetrical nursing experience
- Minimum of two years of Labor & Delivery experience
- Previous teaching or clinical education experience preferred
Licensure & Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan
- Certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required within orientation period
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within orientation period if providing coverage for critically ill populations

- Strong analytical, organizational, and prioritization skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong collaboration, consultation, and negotiation abilities
- Proficiency with clinical documentation systems and common software applications
- Ability to work effectively in interprofessional teams
- High degree of flexibility and adaptability
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to sustain prolonged mental and visual focus, including frequent computer use
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with heavier tasks as needed
- Capacity to perform job duties requiring standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and handling equipment
